Shirley learned about VGIF’s grassroots development grants while a member of the Vanuatu and Rwanda Associations of University Women and as the Vice President of International Federation of University Women. Her interest in project work to support gender equality and women’s empowerment at local level led to an invitation to join a VGIF committee. Once a committee member she became more aware of the outstanding reach and effectiveness of VGIF in their endeavors towards changing the world for women in developing countries.

Shirley says, “Through my work on the VGIF board and committees and with VGIF staff, I have met some amazingly generous and compassionate women who are now lifelong friends. The small projects VGIF funds lead to economically sustainable futures for women and social and systemic change in communities. I believe that in societies where resources are not distributed equally we all have an obligation to assist in redistributing opportunities.
